The Importance Of Dental Health Care For Seniors

As you age, there can be a number of issues that will impact the mouth that can not only increase, but also worsen. So while most seniors are not concerned with researching Invisalign before and after testimonials, they are and should be interested in researching some of the basic things they should be doing and checking up on.

Because of this, it is extremely important that you are educated on the conditions that are associated with aging that can have tremendous impact on your oral health. For the most part, you are going to find that you can live a healthier lifestyle by simply taking the best possible care of your teeth and gums.

A lot of people do not seem to realize that regular medical as well as dental check-ups will be crucial. There are also people who simply do not know that mouth health is a major factor when it comes to overall health.

When you stop to think about it, the mouth is actually like a window to the rest of the human body. This is why maintaining good oral habits and health can be some of the smartest decisions that you can make for your body as a whole.

These are just a few of the oral health problems that can arise with seniors that do not get proper dental care:

Dry Mouth – This is a condition caused by a lack of saliva flow, which could be due in part to certain medications or even the impact of various cancer treatments.

Root Decay – Often caused by the exposure of the root of the tooth, this condition is caused by acids within the mouth. The gum tissue recedes from the mouth and the roots then become exposed. Roots no longer have the right amount of enamel to help protect them and they will be much more prone to decay.

Denture-Induced Stomatitis – If you happen to have poor dental hygiene, ill-fitting dentures or even the build up of fungus in the mouth, it can cause inflammation of the tissues that are under the denture.

By itself, age is not going to be a sole factor that will determine oral health. However, there can be a variety of medical conditions that can hinder the health of your mouth and teeth.

Not only do you need to make sure that you are keeping up with all of your regular brushing and flossing, but if you happen to have dentures or partials, you will benefit from regular cleanings and keeping your mouth free from bacteria so that you can achieve optimum dental health regardless of your age.

This is why we like to highlight the best dentist every year in local areas around Ontario Canada, to help you either set up a consultation, or get references for a dentist in your specific area.

What Are The Benefits Of Visiting A Dentist?

Visiting the dentist on a regular basis is important because these visits help to keep your teeth and gums healthy. This is why dentists recommend that you visit your family dentist twice a year or every six months.

The Dental Visit

When you visit the dentist for a checkup, there are two different parts of the visit. The first part of the visit involves the actual checkup; the second part involves the cleaning.

During the checkup, the dentist will inspect your teeth and gums for cavities, plaque and tartar. Plaque is a sticky substance that constantly grows on the teeth. If the plaque is not effectively removed from the teeth, it will become hard. Harden plaque is known as tartar.

Once tartar is on the teeth, it cannot be removed by simply brushing and flossing the teeth. The tartar will need to be professionally removed by a dentist or it can lead to further dental issues.

The gums will then be checked. Shallow spaces in the gums between the teeth are an indication of healthy gums. Deeper spaces indicate possible gum disease. During the checkup, the throat, tongue, neck and face should be inspected for issues such as swelling.

The teeth are then cleaned, and the dentist will scale the teeth if tartar is found on the teeth. After they have been scaled, the teeth will be polished to remove superficial stains on the teeth. The final step of the cleaning process is flossing.

The Benefits Of Regular Visits

Regular dental visits are the key to preventing health issues later on. Although it is normal to have some levels of good bacteria in the mouth, an overgrowth of bad bacteria in the mouth can cause issues. Fortunately, the bad bacteria can be removed through regular visits with the dentist.

If not treated, the infection the bad bacteria can bring has the potential to spread to other areas of the body. This can become a problem especially for older people, pregnant women and other groups considered high risk. Gum disease can spread very quickly when the teeth are not checked on a regular basis by a dentist.

Dental visits can also uncover other possible health issues including nutritional deficiencies, oral cancer, diabetes and osteoporosis.

The dental industry continues to evolve, and as new technology continues to be used, dentists will learn new techniques to prevent teeth, gum and health issues. Schedule a regular visit with your dentist to prevent health complications.
